Settimana internazionale della performance

Bologna - Italy

Description

“Under the eyes of everyone, at least those present, the naked and direct exhibitions of the body with all its extensions take place; but the naked eye of the spectators who circulate is promptly doubled by the many mechanical or electronic eyes of the photographic devices and the 'cameras' which with their clicks and their tenacious buzz form the background...". With these words Renato Barilli presented the International Performance Week promoted by the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna of Bologna from 1 to 6 June 1977. For six days, throughout the exhibition halls and in the external spaces of the museum there had been uninterrupted events from afternoon to evening forty-nine actions by Italian and international artists. The curator's reflection focused on the particular character of immaterial and impermanent artistic experiences and the need to entrust their testimony to film, video and photographic images. Through his company D.A.R.C. and in the double role of producer and director, Mario Carbone made seven color short films on that occasion to document (with the voice and stories of Barilli himself) the performances of Hermann Nitsch, Marina Abramović and Ulay, Renate Bertlmann, Vincenzo Agnetti, Robert Kushner, Geoffrey Hendricks and Brian Buczak, Giordano Falzoni. As was his habit, Carbone did not give up following some key events of the Bolognese event with the lens of his camera, thus composing a significant body of black and white images. In addition to the historic Imponderabilia by Abramović and Ulay and the artists filmed in the shorts, the photographs capture the performances of Luigi Ontani, Fried Rosenstock, Luca Patella, Linda Christanell, Vettor Pisani and many others. Finally, ample space was given to what could represent the 'behind the scenes' of the event: the staging of the performances, the exchanges between the artists, the public and the critics in the rooms of the Gallery, the outdoor breaks."
