Giuseppe Chiari (1926)
Italy
Biography :
"While pursuing engineering studies, he studied piano and composition and created the first Jazz Club, Amici del Jazz, in 1947 at the university, with Giampero Taverna. In 1950, first composition C, then in 1961, he created with Pietro Grossi the association "Vita Musicale Contemporanea", and presented in 1962, in Rome, with the composer Sylvano Bussotti, an exhibition of graphic scores, Musica e segno (music and sign). The musical score is for him a pictorial work in its own right; the exhibition, after a long journey, ends at the Creative and Performing Arts Center in Buffalo. The same year, he was invited by George Maciunas, founder of the Fluxus movement, to the first Fluxus concert in Wiesbaden (Germany) with Gesti sul piano, a musical and gestural performance, often repeated. The performer must clear their mind and follow minimal instructions: long pauses, playing directly on the strings or on the piano lid. As a member, he will be present in most of the Fluxus events organized in Paris, New York and Wiesbaden, because the multidisciplinary spirit of his work and his great interest in the very process of creation makes him a precursor of the movement. In 1965 he created concert performances, Teatrino and Strimpellare at Judson Hall, during the New York Avant-Garde Festival organized by Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik, where he reversed the codes between the composer, the performers and the audience listeners by using the writing, photography, film, video and various objects. In 1969, he participated, as a speaker, in the conference on Avant-garde Music organized by the Venice Biennale. His texts were published, such as in 1969, Musica senza contrappunto, in 1972 Senza titolo, in 1973 Teatrino, in 1974 Musica Madre, which helped to increase his international fame. He presents his performances and graphic works in Europe and the United States, including the creation in 1982 of the Concerto per Luce at the Gallery of Modern Art in Vienna (Austria). In 2001, the Kunsthalle of the Fridericianum Museum in Kassel devoted a major retrospective to him, as did the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome in 2005. For Giuseppe Chiari, prolific artist, sounds, objects, situations, gestures, images, everything is part of the work of art."
