Che cos’è l’arte?
What is Art?

Description

The question Che cos’è l’arte? was posed to the public during the 1969 Biennale dei Giovani in Milan and the 1974 Biennale d’Arte Città di Milano.

Gabriele Devecchi defines this work as a: “video survey questioning the public and the people responsible for the work, which will aim to produce statistics relating to the concept of art of that year”. (Source, artist's website).

Additional Informations

"In 1969, Davide Boriani and Gabriele De Vecchi, in collaboration with the group Vid.N, created the environment with closed circuit video Che cos’è l’arte? [What is Art?] for the Biennale dei Giovani [Young Artists Biennale] at the Palazzo della Permanente (Milan). The work questioned its audience about the concept of art. The video environment would be repeated at the Biennale d’Arte Città di Milano in 1974." Gabriele Devecchi and Davide Boriani both title this video Cos'è l'arte each on their sites.

A photogram on the website of the artist Gabriele Devecchi presents yet another title "Che cosa è l'arte?" followed by the words: "intervento di Boriani e De Vecchi con la collaborazione del gruppo Vid.N: In alto Davide Boriani e Lea Vergine, A sinistra: Enrico Crispolti".

"Boriani, Devecchi and the VDN gruppo - "Cos'è l'arte?", TV installation at the 28th Milan Biennale, Palazzo della Permanente, 1973. Question asked to each visitor on the day of the inauguration. The answers, recorded in audio and video, are broadcast by ten monitors distributed throughout the exhibition rooms. (Source, website, artist's website).
