Description
Gianni Colombo comes from optical art, the video was made with a wobulator, it is a generator which allows a frequency or a signal to be visualized on the television.
"From a very simple geometric figure, a square outlined in black and white, which rotates slowly, Colombo draws a series of increasingly complex dynamic variations: the figure vibrates, expands and contracts, quivers, transforming into luminous pulses. These effects are obtained thanks to the "vobulator" device. Columbus's visual elaboration is given in response and commentary to the sound of Agnetti, who designed an instrument, the "neg", to obtain the negative of the sound; allows, that is to say, to perceive either the fixed note in place of silence or silence in place of the voice during a sound recording. “Consequently”, concludes Agnetti in his intervention coordinated with that of Colombo , the “geometric figure that you observed is in no way robust, while the words that you heard are silences.” (Source: Tommaso Trini, "Di videotape in videotappa", Domus, n° 495, February 1971, p. 51).
Additional Informations
What remains is the digitization of an extract recently found by Lisa Parolo in the archives of the artist Vincenzo Agnetti, unfortunately the digitization is without sound, although the video had sound. The tape remains untraceable. We retain as a trace of the entire video, only photograms showing the different stages of variations of the work visible on the Gianni Colombo archives site. (Source, artist's website).
Tommaso Trini writes that the video is nine minutes long. (Source: Tommaso Trini, "Di videotape in videotappa", Domus, n° 495, February 1971, p. 51).
