(Geduld) Wachten, Attendre, Wait, Warten

Description

“Dewaele films the push button of a doorbell and the inscription that accompanies it: Wachten, wait. A single fixed shot lasting more than 30 minutes. The spectator waits and waits again to finally realize that it is his patience (geduld) that the artist has decided to put to the test. It’s degree zero of film writing, a film where nothing happens. Jacques Charlier (Portes du STP, 1974) and Jacques Lizène (La vie, camp de travail, 1975) will use the same cinematic style. This video is one of the starting points for a broader reflection that Dewaele will lead during the 80s: the experience of public space and its limits as a political issue, the relationship between the intellectual and the media or between the artist and the public space which seems to him to become more and more problematic.” (Source: Jean-Michel Botquin)
