Description
“Hommage I is the first in a series of five produced in 1972 and the first in a remarkable series of fourteen videos produced between 1972 and 1981. It belongs to the experimental stage of video art, when the technology was still in its infancy. its beginnings. In Homage to ...I, a naked woman - the artist herself - rolls around in white bed sheets in slow motion. At first it looks like she's sleeping. But after a while, it begins to move, to roll on itself at a rhythm reminiscent of the twilight state between wakefulness and sleep. The piece is recorded in real time, without editing. We discover a space which is revealed in time, a figure which is captured there. Sensuality, the passage of time, boredom go hand in hand. The video refers to the tradition of the female nude, one of the most classic motifs in the history of art. Lili Dujourie deliberately chose a theme that had no place in the dominant conceptual art scene of the 1970s. She is, moreover, her own model. The woman, she explains, has always been "the role model", and I wanted to get rid of that - as a woman, I could hardly manipulate another woman! (...) If we want to evoke the intimacy of the female nude, we have to do it ourselves, we cannot ask a model to do it for us." Lili Dujourie redefines the conventions concerning the relationship between the model and the creator, between the one who looks and the one who is looked at. The title refers to a homage to the history of art. Not so much a particular image as the whole history of art. art, all these images which continue to resonate in the artist's memory. The poses that Dujourie takes are determined by memories of nudes from the artistic tradition, in his own words "a physical transformation of everything I have seen in my life” (Source: Jean-Michel Botquin)
