Description

“Hubert Van Es is the pseudonym of Flor Bex, founder of the ICC in Antwerp in 1963, first director of Muhka, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp in 1985. Initiator of the Continental Video production studio, he started 1974, in some video experiments, discovering the equipment he acquired for the studio installed at the ICC. In this experiment for self-communication, Van Es observes himself under the eye of the camera, revealing his cathodic existence on a television screen and clones Chris Goyvaerts who participates in the experiment. “A man looks at his own face, which is recorded and displayed on a television screen right in front of him. The soundtrack consists of a distorted voice speaking incomprehensible words. An image of the same man is pasted over the recorded image, like a transparent veil. [...] The real man standing in a room, the same man as a spectator and therefore seen from behind, and vice versa. In the last scene, another man stands alternately on the left and right.
