"The video belongs to the series “Problématique du langage télévisuel”, created for professor Rene Berger's course at the University of Lausanne. It was presented at a symposium of experts from the Council of Europe in June 1972. The experiment consists of presenting a phrase taken from "Through a Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, in 23 different "image" conditions. This test allows for the examination of:
a) The different meanings of the message according to the variables introduced.
b) The different secondary effects that are brought about by the cohabitation of several types of language (or codes) in the television message.
The chosen excerpt is a follows:
“Peut-être le lait du miroir n'est-il pas bon à boire ?... À l'instant suivant, Alice avait traversé la glace et sauté avec agilité dans le salon du Miroir.
Cela semble très joli, dit-elle, mais c'est rudement difficile à assimiler. (Elle ne voulait pas s'avouer qu'elle n'y comprenait rien du tout, voyez-vous). Je ne sais pourquoi, j'ai l'impression que cela me remplit la tête de toutes sortes d'idées... j'ignore malheureusement quelles sont ces idées ? Pourtant quelqu'un a tué quelque chose, c'est ce qu'il y a de clair là dedans en tout cas...”"
