Jochen Gerz (1940)
Germany
Biography :
"A multidisciplinary artist of German origin, Jochen Gerz (born in 1940 in Berlin) led most of his artistic career in Paris. He has produced numerous performances, works of concrete poetry, installations, photographic works uniquely combining text and image, as well as videos. His work has gradually become involved in the public space (he has produced anti-monuments in Berlin, Hamburg and Biron in particular as part of public commissions), bringing into play both collective memory and the responsibility of the social body. Refusing with rare obstinacy to confine his approach to a commercial and sanitized relationship with the public, Gerz occupies a unique place in contemporary art."
